fem tusen og fem
#2 - LGBTQ+ Organizations
As part of the mediation program Translating Togetherness, initiated and curated by Daniela Ramos Arias, artist Nayara Leite produced a series of fanzines called fem tusen og fem. The zines brought together facts about the LGBTQ+ history in Bergen, as well as interviews, current events and issues relevant to today. 100 copies of each zine were randomly delivered from March to May to Hordaland Kunstsenter’s neighbours, throughout the postcode 5005 in Nordnes.
Joakim Eide had a commission for the cover drawing
of fem tusen og fem, #2: LGBTQ+ Organizations
The cover drawing was made out of my own vision of how to summorize the experience of working within LGBTQ+ Organizations.
At this point I had been voulenteering for 8 years in different queer centered organizations.
As I reflected on this experience, I felt a cycle of fight and defeat. Therefore, as seen in the cover drawing, we move
from mourning and connecting, to eduacting and advocating for our lives, protesting and being visible at pride,
and finally are allowed visibility and public speaking. But then we start mourning and connecting again,
as visibility sometimes comes at the cost of safety.
Speaking from my experience, it’s this bittersweet moment of fallen confetti and burning candles seen in the forefront of the drawing,
that connected this illustration as the “circle of work” in LGBTQ+ Organizations.
Thank you for this opportunity, Nayara.
